Palliative Care Pharmacy

We are proud to be one of only 8 Palliative Care Pharmacies in Lothian. Our pharmacist undertakes regular training with the local Marie Curie Pharmacist. We stock Palliative Care drugs for NHS Lothian and this reduces any waiting time for supply to our patients.

What is palliative care?

If you have an illness that cannot be cured, palliative care works to make you feel as comfortable as possible, by managing your pain and other difficult symptoms. It also involves psychological, social and spiritual support for you and your family. We provide palliative care in Edinburgh.

Who can provide palliative care?

Palliative care teams are made up of different healthcare professionals and can co-ordinate the care of people with an incurable illness. These professionals include doctors, nurses, pharmacists and therapists.

When does palliative care begin?

Palliative care should begin when you feel that you need it and can last days, months or years. People in lots of different situations can benefit from this care and we as a team will work hard to provide it to those that are in need. This includes people whose death is imminent, as well as people who:

– have an advanced incurable illness, such as cancer or dementia
– are generally frail and have co-existing conditions that mean they are expected to die within 12 months
– have existing conditions and are at risk of dying suddenly
– have a life-threatening acute condition caused by a sudden event, such as an accident or stroke

Palliative care is not just for the end of life – you may also be able to receive palliative care earlier in your illness, while you are still receiving other therapies to treat your condition.
